Happy New Year!  We will start up again on the first Thursday in January of 2008 at Francis Howell Central High School.  Since this is a busy time of the year for indoor activities by high school students, we will likely be practicing in the cafeteria or the hallways depending on space availability.

The club held a recreational tournament for 21 tennis players that are part of the Gateway Junior Tennis - St. Louis on Friday, Dec 14th.  Their web site can be found at http://www.jrgrandprix.com.  This tournament had two divisions broken up by age.  There was a category for under-14 and under-18.  There were two round robin groups for each age category.  The top two players from each group advanced to the single elimination semifinals.  Trophies were awarded to the top three finishers in each age group.

     Under-14              Under-18

1st  David Wasserman       Adam King
2nd  Joyce Chen            Kevin Cui
3rd  Christopher Thompson  Joseph Larson

New Week Night

Mondays
6:00-9:00pm

Starts Feb 4th at
Francis Howell North
High School
President's Corner

It's with great pleasure that I announce an expansion in the partnership between SPTTC and the Francis Howell School District (FHSD).  Francis Howell North High School is starting a table tennis program for their students on Tuesdays after school.  In support of their efforts, SPTTC is moving six of their tables to FHN for the students to use.  In exchange, FHN is allowing our club to practice at their school on Monday evenings from 6-9pm.

Starting Monday, February 4th, SPTTC will start playing on Monday evenings at FHN instead of playing on Friday nights at Francis Howell Central.  The practice sessions will occur in the Commons (cafeteria).  Players should come in the main entrance lobby (shown in the picture above) and turn left.  Then take the first hallway on the right.

Check the CALENDAR below to make sure where we are playing and when we are open for practice.

Visit this web site frequently as more "news" is being planned.  Watch for an announcement!

What a tournament!!  Our April 19-20, 2008 USATT-sanctioned tournament brought in 128 players from 9 states...Arkansas, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, Ohio, and Tennessee.  These numbers beat last year's tournament by 23 players and 3 states (but who's counting...LOL).  Our thanks goes out to all the players and volunteers that made the effort to support our tournament.  We gave away $1,200 in prize money and held both Giant Round Robin events as well as rated events.

You can view the results of the tournament at the link at the top of the page (http://www.spttc.org/files/Apr 08 Results.pdf).  Congratulations to Lukasz Fita who won both the Giant RR A division as well as the Open Singles.

Congratulations to the Francis Howell School District high schools that competed in the first high school table tennis championships held on May 14th at Francis Howell Central.  The team from Francis Howell Central (FHC) high school, pictured here, edged Francis Howell North (FHN) by four matches to win 16-12 in a modified round robin format.  A traveling trophy, purchased by the Saint Peters Table Tennis Club, was presented to the winning school.  The school's name, date, and score will be engraved on the trophy.  The trophy will reside at the winning high school until the next competition is held where the winning school of that competition will take home the trophy.  Match results can be viewed by clicking on http://www.spttc.org/files/FHSD Results 5-14-08.pdf.  Additional photos of the competition can be viewed at http://www.spttc.org/FHSD 5-14-08.html.

The 2008 Lindenwood June Open 2-star table tennis tournament was a huge success with 86 players coming from eight different states.  Our thanks goes out to the university for the use of their spacious gym and to Butterfly for sponsoring the tournament balls.  Newgy coach Yang dominated the tournament in both the Open Singles and the Giant A Round Robin Singles event.  Shigang Yang (pictured above) never lost a match in capturing the top events.  His rating at the time of the tournament was an outstanding 2602.

Lindenwood University in partnership with the Saint Peters Table Tennis Club (SPTTC) is in the midst of scheduling additional tournaments to be held on campus.  The next USATT 2-star tournament will be September 6-7, 2008 and will follow the same format as the June tournament.  Click on the links below for additional information.

What a weekend for table tennis (Sep 6-7)!  The 2008 National Collegiate Men's Singles Champion, Alfred Najem (2475), was leading Newgy's Coach Shigang Yang (2617) 2-0 in games in the final match of Sunday's Giant A Round Robin singles.  In this best of 5 games match, Coach Yang was able to come back and tie the match up at 2-2 with some outstanding play.  Alfred then took a commanding lead in the 5th and final game 6-1.  The crowd was watching to see what Yang would do and he didn't disappoint them.  Point by point he climbed out of this deficit and ended up taking the match 11-9 in the 5th.

We want to thank Lindenwood University for hosting this tournament on their 18 Butterfly Centrefold 25 Sky Rollaway tables.  There were about 90 people representing 7 different states.  Butterfly sponsored the tournament by providing the white 3-star balls for the competition.

A Photo Album provides some insight into the venue, players, and the competition.  All of the individual scores/results for each and every match are available for review.

The next tournament to be held on the campus of Lindenwood will be on March 21-22, 2009.

The Saint Peters Table Tennis Club (SPTTC) continues to increase its membership with new players.  Most players in the local St. Charles County area discover the club by Googling "table tennis" or "ping pong", for example.  SPTTC players range in age from 8-78, from inexperienced to tournament players, and include both men and women.  All players are welcome, and encouraged, to drop by and hit some balls with other table tennis enthusiasts.

The club is rapidly approaching its 100th separate household membership since its inception on March 31, 2005.  The annual membership dues have not been raised since the club started.  It has always been a goal of the club to keep their costs low in an effort to allow anyone to join.  Family memberships costs $48 for the year, adult memberships are $36, and junior memberships (under 18) are just $24.  Those prices will be hard to beat on an annual basis.

SPTTC has continued its relationships with the Francis Howell School District by allowing students and faculty to use their tables and equipment in exchange for practice time on some evenings.  High school clubs have now been initiated at Francis Howell Central and Francis Howell North high schools.  Central and North will compete against each other for bragging rights this Fall.  Central leads North 1-0 in this rivalry.

Plans are being made to host the annual spring table tennis tournament.  Visit this website for future details.

The high school table tennis battle between the Spartans of Francis Howell Central (FHC) and the Knights of Francis Howell North (FHN) raged on Wednesday, November 12th, at FHN as the Spartans claimed victory over the Knights 28-4.  This is the second victory for the FHC team over the Knights.  The perpetual rotating trophy was recently engraved with Francis Howell Central's name on it and is proudly displayed at the school.  The sponsoring FHC teacher, Mr. Whelan, was pleased with his team's victory.  FHN's teacher sponsor, Mr. Besse, looks forward to a rematch during the upcoming winter months.  Individual scores can be viewed at http://www.spttc.org/files/FHSD Results 11-12-08.pdf.

Gateway Junior Table Tennis Championships

Twenty-one junior tennis players came out to compete in the 2nd Annual Gateway Table Tennis Championships.  This year the competition was held at Lindenwood University on Sunday, December 7th, at the Hyland Performance Arena.  The players were divided up into four round robin groups.  The winners and runner-ups in each group were awarded trophies.  Results!

The idea of young tennis players coming out to play table tennis was the idea of Craig Tidwell, current director of the St. Louis Gateway Junior Tennis Grand Prix.  Craig thought it would be a novel idea.  So he contacted me back in the summer of 2007 about the concept.  A partnership was formed to promote the idea and the sport of table tennis.

Part of the mission for table tennis at Lindenwood University is to promote the sport of table tennis to the youth in the surrounding metropolitan area.  With more attention being given to the sport of table tennis, young boys and girls can tell that there is a future in table tennis if they want to pursue it.  Lindenwood views this as an opportunity to build a pipeline of future prospects for its varsity table tennis program.

Group 1 was won by Kevin Cui.  Kevin didn't lose a match on his way to victory.  Second place in Group 1 went to Steven Beck.  Steven held his second place finish by the narrowest of margins as he won a decisive 5-game match 12-10 in the 5th game against Christoper Thompson.  Group 2 saw Michael Collins sweeping all contenders for first place.  Caleb Winter was awarded second place by narrowly losing to Michael 11-7 in the 5th and final game of the match.  Group 3 went to the undefeated Matthew Wong who was 4-0.  Second place went to Andrew Lanson who fought off Andrew Gordon 11-8 in the 5th.  Group 4 had one additional player, but that didn't stop Nick Peccola from taking on all challengers.  Nick took first place with a 5-0 record.  Second place in Group 4 went to another Lanson sibling, Alex.  Alex compiled a 4-1 record and took home a trophy to match his brother's trophy in Group 3.
